Safety and Security at the Library

Over the last few months, we have received a few comments and concerns about safety and security. We are listening and take all comments and concerns seriously.

Discussions about safety and security at the library are not new. Public entities have an obligation to make safety and security a priority. We haven’t embarked on this work alone. We have enormous support from the City of Appleton Facilities Department (Facilities), Appleton Police Department (APD) and other libraries, including the Milwaukee Public Library (MPL).

In brief, here are some of the changes we have made regarding safety and security:

• We have recently updated our safety and security policies and procedures.
• We completed a security assessment of the building with APD, Facilities and the MPL Security Manager. The results are being brought to the appropriate committees for funding approval.
• We contracted with a security company to provide a security guard in the library. This has been in place since 2018.

In addition, the city is in the process of making changes in the neighborhood including additional cameras and signage.

If you have questions, comments or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us. Our goal is to provide a safe and welcoming environment for our community.
